Collect soil data anywhere in the world with LandPKS Soil ID 1.4.6

By Derek Caelin

Our world is more connected than ever, but many places still lack reliable access to the Internet. That’s why we’re pleased to share that our latest release of LandPKS Soil ID enables site creation without an internet connection. This means that wherever you are—from an urban garden, to a field excursion in Utah, to a rural farm in South Sudan—you’ll be able to create a site and gather data about the land and soil. Get started with LandPKS Soil ID today on Android and iOS.

To get started, simply take out your phone, tap your location on the map, and begin collecting data. Once you reconnect to the Internet, visit your sites to review possible soil matches and share the data with your partners.

We expect to continue extending the offline experience over time, including expanding offline functionality of the Soil ID algorithm. If this would help in your work, please contact us.

What’s Coming Next

Speaking of the Soil ID algorithm, we are developing a Soil ID API so that developers focused on soils can benefit from our characterization method. Many software creators rely on soil maps to drive decision-making, but a lack of ground-truthed information often forces them to assume the dominant soil in the map is the correct one. The Soil ID algorithm will allow developers to obtain a ranked list of all potential soils from a given location, and refine this list by providing the API with locally collected data. Contact us if you would like to be a part of the testing phase of the API.

We are also working on a Soil Health module, starting with the frequently requested observation of pH. By enabling the collection of key soil health properties, we aim to help people make better land management decisions and measure the impact of their management practices over time. Please let us know if you’d like to provide feedback on early designs, and join our beta program to get the first look at new features.
