We’re excited to announce the launch of Terraso’s LandPKS Soil ID, a powerful new tool for sustainable land stewardship. Use this free and open source tool to obtain soil and ecological site identification based on soil map predictions and data collected in the field. As of today, soil ID predictions are available for sites in the U.S., and we expect to support sites anywhere in the world very soon.
Key features:
- Gather observations about the land with or without a connection to the Internet
- Use projects to collaborate with a team to gather standardized data
- Identify your soil by comparing your observations to likely soil types pulled from soil maps
We’re proud to have collaborated with so many partners to build this app. Thank you to the many soil scientists, rangeland managers, farmers, governments, and map makers who contributed their funding, time, and expertise.

LandPKS Soil ID builds upon the decade-long experience of the legacy LandPKS app. Soil ID has a number of features not found in the legacy app, including project management and a streamlined user experience. Over time, Soil ID will be updated to include other features of the legacy app. Terraso will also build a standalone monitoring app so you can measure the impact of your land management practices over time. We will continue to support the legacy app as we develop the new apps, and will help users make the transition to the new apps when they are ready.
Roadmap
Here are a few highlights from our roadmap:
- Global Soil ID
- Land Capability Classification (LCC): Determine the limitations to your land use
- Soil Maps in App: Review soil maps directly in the LandPKS app.
- Land Monitoring: track the change in vegetation over time
- More inputs: make more observations about the land, including:
- Effervesence
- Soil structure
- Percent clay
- Bedrock
